Specialized Program

246-Hour Thai Massage Therapy

An ancient healing art, taught with rigor. Our comprehensive program covers both Northern and Southern Thai traditions, sen line energy theory, and yoga-assisted stretching — far beyond the beginner intensives that stop at 36 to 150 hours.

Program Overview

Beyond the Weekend Intensive

Basic Thai massage intensives last 36 to 150 hours over a few days or weeks. They teach sequences — but not the underlying system. NYMI's 246-hour program gives you the full picture: the philosophy, the energy anatomy, the biomechanics, and the clinical judgment to adapt Thai technique to real clients with real bodies.

Students learn both major Thai traditions — the Northern (Chiang Mai) style known for its meditative pace and Northern influences, and the Southern (Bangkok) style characterized by acupressure intensity and its proximity to Chinese medicine. You will be fluent in both.

The program also covers yoga-assisted stretching and PNF techniques, making graduates uniquely skilled in working with flexibility, mobility, and active populations seeking an alternative to static table massage.

Two Traditions

Northern & Southern Thai Styles

Thai massage is not a single monolithic practice. Two major traditions evolved independently and are taught in full at NYMI. Graduates are fluent in both.

Northern Style

Chiang Mai Tradition

Originating in Northern Thailand, this style reflects Indian Ayurvedic and yogic influences. Slower, more meditative, and stretch-focused.

  • Emphasis on passive yoga-assisted stretching
  • Longer, flowing sequences along sen lines
  • Meditative pace with breath awareness
  • Strong influence of Hatha yoga
  • Preferred for relaxation & flexibility work
Southern Style

Bangkok Tradition

The Southern style carries stronger Chinese medicine influences, characterized by acupressure intensity and point-specific work along energy lines.

  • Stronger thumb and palm pressure on points
  • Shorter, more targeted sequences
  • Closer to Chinese acupressure in approach
  • Greater focus on specific energy blockages
  • Preferred for therapeutic and clinical work
