Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About NYMI

What is the difference between the three programs?

The 1000-hour program is our most comprehensive credential and the standard required for New York State LMT licensure. The 400-hour Swedish program provides foundational training ideal for spa and wellness employment. The 500-hour Sports Massage program is a specialized track for working with athletes and active populations. All three programs can lead to rewarding careers, and credits from the 400-hour program may be applied toward the 1000-hour LMT credential.

Do I need prior massage experience to apply?

No prior massage experience is required for the 400-hour Swedish or 1000-hour programs. We start from the foundations and build your skills progressively. The 500-hour Sports Massage program recommends some foundational massage training, though exceptions may be made — speak with admissions to discuss your background.

How long does each program take to complete?

Program duration depends on the track you choose (day or evening) and your personal schedule. The 400-hour Swedish program typically takes 6–9 months. The 500-hour Sports Massage program typically takes 8–12 months. The 1000-hour LMT program typically takes 12–18 months. We offer rolling admissions with multiple start dates per year.

What are the class schedules like?

We offer both day and evening tracks to accommodate working adults. Day classes typically run Monday–Friday. Evening schedules are available for students who work during the day. Specific scheduling and start dates vary by program — contact our admissions office at (202) 521-8816 for current schedules.

Will I be eligible to sit for the MBLEx after completing the 1000-hour program?

Yes. The 1000-hour program is specifically designed to meet and exceed the New York State requirements for LMT licensure. Our curriculum is aligned with the MBLEx blueprint, and we include dedicated board exam preparation in the final portion of the program. Graduates consistently report feeling well-prepared for the examination.

Can I transfer credits from another massage school?

Transfer credit evaluation is available for students who have completed coursework at another New York State licensed massage school. Submit transcripts and course descriptions to our admissions office for evaluation. Transfer credits are accepted on a case-by-case basis and subject to approval by our Program Director.

Do you offer financial aid or payment plans?

Yes. We offer flexible monthly payment plans to make our programs accessible. We also work with veterans' educational benefits, workforce development funding, and employer tuition assistance programs. Contact our admissions office to discuss your financial situation and the options available to you.

What happens if I need to take a leave of absence?

We understand life happens. NYMI has a formal leave of absence policy that allows students to pause their studies and return without losing prior credit. Leaves must be requested in writing and approved by the Program Director. Contact our administrative office for the complete leave of absence policy and procedures.

What is the job placement rate for graduates?

NYMI graduates consistently find employment in their field. We provide career services including resume review, job search guidance, and access to our alumni employer network. Massage therapy is a growing field — the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects continued growth in employment opportunities for massage therapists nationwide.

How do I verify a graduate's certificate?

Employers and licensing boards can verify NYMI credentials at our Certificate Verification portal. Enter the certificate number found on the physical credential to confirm graduate records. For official verification letters, contact the Registrar directly at (202) 521-8816.
