Program Overview

Built for the Athletic Environment

Sports massage is one of the fastest-growing specializations in therapeutic bodywork, driven by expanding demand from professional sports organizations, collegiate athletics, fitness centers, and individual athletes seeking performance and recovery support.

The NYMI 500-hour Sports Massage program goes beyond foundational technique. Students learn to think clinically โ€” assessing biomechanics, recognizing injury patterns, designing pre- and post-event protocols, and collaborating with coaches, trainers, and physical therapists.

Graduates are prepared for employment with sports teams, athletic training rooms, performance centers, and rehabilitation clinics โ€” or to build a specialized private practice serving athletes at every level.

Clinical Framework

The Three Phases of Sports Massage

Sports massage practice is organized around the athletic event cycle. Our curriculum trains you to apply the right techniques at every stage.

Phase 1

Pre-Event Massage

Stimulating, energizing techniques applied 15 minutes to 2 hours before competition. Focus on warm-up, circulation, and mental readiness.

Phase 2

Inter-Event & Event Massage

Brief, targeted work applied between events or at the side of the field. Focus on cramping, acute soreness, and maintaining tissue readiness.

Phase 3

Post-Event & Recovery Massage

Calming, restorative techniques applied after competition. Focus on DOMS reduction, lymphatic flushing, and nervous system recovery.
